McCarthy wins 2019 JY15 North Americans at Noroton Yacht Club

Congr
atulations to Mark and eight year old Jameson McCarthy from Duck Island Yacht Club as the 2019 JY15 North American champs.

Noroton put on a great event squeezing five races out of very light air. Many lead changes made for a sweet victory for the McCarthy team decided on a tiebreaker. Kudos to Mark Allen and Emily Simon for making the trip from Michigan to get 2nd on the tiebreaker. That taste of sweet victory was felt by many of the competitors and will keep everyone coming back for more next year. Joe Healey and Mandy Merritt were so close as were Max Simmons and Alexis Gesualdo who would have won if not for an 11th hour thermal breeze on Sunday. Most of all it was great to hang out with all our old and new friends in the JY15 class.

Fleet Captain: Mark McCarthy #2400 mccarthygm1@aol.com

JY 15 Sailing has been a staple at DIYC since the boat was first made up in Niantic. I remember renting one (#18) through Pilots Point and sailing with my sister Marie (everyone thought we were married) winning the first night against Dave and Linda Dyson. I now race hull #2400 with my son Will who is equally hooked on racing JY15’s. I am excited to announce another fantastic year of JY-15 sailing at DIYC with a top notch race committee and great sailors on the water.

In partnership with FBYC, DIYC is attracting many frostbite sailors to our summer program and our intent is to build one of the best Thursday night OD summer series, and likewise help feed our local frostbite club for those who wish to extend the season. We have also worked with many other local sailors to get a bead on the JY15 used sailboat market, so if you are interested in buying one please let me know.

You do not have to be a DIYC member to race and storage comes as part of the entry fee. DIYC has also matched FBYC in our fee structure charging $18 a day for racing and even further discounted when joining both series. We welcome any new sailors who want to experience a Thursday night of racing at DIYC to come on out for a test drive, free of charge.

I look forward to seeing you on the water!

The 2017 JY15 racing schedule is as follows (see Notice of Race):

     First Series:  2017 - Thursdays June 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, July 6, 13

     Second Series:  2017 - Thursdays July 20, 27, Aug 3, 10, 17, 24, 31

First Warning: 1830 Eastern Daylight Time, each date

On Saturday, August 5, 2017, DIYC will host the JY15 CT State Championships (see Notice of Race).  More details will follow.

On Saturday-Sunday, September 23-24, 2017 DIYC will host the 2017 JY15 North American Championship.  Registration and all race documents are available at JY15 North American Championships which is a link to the Yachtscoring event page.

The following article about this event was published in the June 2017 issue of WindCheck magazine:

"Duck Island Yacht Club (DIYC) has been selected as the host of the 2017 JY15 North American Championship to be held on Long Island Sound in Westbrook, CT, September 23rd and September 24th. The JY15 Class and Duck Island Yacht Club are pleased to invite all JY15 sailors to an exciting regatta held near where JY15’s were born and first raced. The JY15 North Americans will be a two day event with multiple races planned each day beginning on Saturday at 11:00AM and ending on Sunday with the last start no later than 1:30PM.

Since 1932 DIYC has been hosting one design racing in various boats including Zip’s, Comet’s, Star’s, Etchell’s, Laser’s, Melges 24’s and JY15’s. Over the years the boats have changed but our passion hasn’t ebbed, today we are home to an active fleet of 12 – 15 JY15’s and we have been running the JY15 Connecticut State Championships since 2004. All JY15 owners are welcome to sail with us for all or part of the season and also attend the CT State Championships to be held on Saturday August 8th, 2017. DIYC encourages the Corinthian spirit in sailing, any 2017 JY15 North American registered owner who has not raced in a DIYC series in the past three years will be allowed free entry to the DIYC Thursday Night One Design Series. We hope you will take this chance to visit DIYC, race with us while tuning up for the NA’s and enjoy our great sailing venue for the summer.

DIYC is located on the Patchogue River in Westbrook, CT, it offers easy access to Long Island Sound and boasts a wide open sailing venue for dinghy racing in Duck Island Roads. The racing area is surrounded by three breakwaters and Duck Island making it a perfect venue with consistent breeze, minimal current and modest waves in most directions. The Yacht Club has a large dry storage parking lot, 1.5 ton crane for your launch and easy ramp launching from the parking lot onto floating docks for JY's. Our elevated clubhouse has an expansive deck, large interior complete with showers and is located just off I-95 exit 65 with many resources within a few miles including hotels, restaurants and marine chandleries.

Save the date, Saturday, September 23rd and Sunday September 24th, 2017 for the JY15 NA’s, look for registration and further postings on the JY15 Class Website and DIYC website in early 2017. We are also encouraging youth teams under 18 by hosting this on a weekend to not miss school, reduced fees for youth teams and special awards. Trophies will be awarded to top overall finishers, top junior skipper, top parent child team and top female skipper. We look forward to seeing you for a fun filled weekend of exciting one design racing, meeting old and new friends and great food and drinks. Any inquiries or questions can be directed to Mark McCarthy at mccarthygm1@aol.com."
