2009 JY15 Connecticut State Championships - 8/01/09
A rare sunny day and light
southwesterly winds (approx 3-7 kts, not so rare) greeted JY15 sailors for the
annual CT State Championship at Duck Island YC. A total of 17 boats came from
VT, NY, RI, and of course, CT. Some arrived with police escort and some barely
arrived (visualize a JY15 spinning upside down on I-95, see any of the
competitors for the full story). Tom Carse served as PRO for this event and got
in six races, which allowed for one drop.
Kristin Connell and Tiffany Skinner battled the fleet to take first place with 9
points. Kevin & Birgit Gillman came in 2nd with 10 points and John & John
Amendola took 3rd with 14 points. Megan Bracken came in 4th place with 22 points
and received the Top Jr. award.
Current was a significant factor throughout the day, with the tide changing from
the ebb to the flood around 2:45. Once the flood started, the fleet experienced
a significant push at the starting line, which lead to multiple general recalls
and required the I Flag to be flown to keep the fleet in check. If the current
wasn’t enough to keep things interesting there was a significant build up of
waves due to the increasing traffic on the water to add to the mix. A fun day on
the water was followed by a party at the clubhouse, with awards and prizes.
Everyone left full and happy and promised to be back for more next year. Check
